What You'll Learn
Course Description
Bharatanatyam, among the oldest of India's classical dance forms, unites rhythm (nritta), expression (abhinaya), and storytelling (natya) into a complete devotional art. Our program honours the traditional guru-shishya parampara, beginning with adavus (basic steps), correct araimandi posture, and hand gestures (hastas) before progressing to full compositions.
Students advance through a graded annual curriculum from Alarippu and Jatiswaram toward Varnam, Padam, and Tillana, learning the Carnatic rhythmic structures and the mythology behind each piece. Dedicated, advanced students may be guided toward their Arangetram, the formal solo debut that marks readiness to perform.
Key Benefits
- Master the foundational adavus, mudras, and araimandi posture
- Develop expressive abhinaya to convey emotion and story
- Build strength, posture, balance, and rhythmic precision (tala)
- Connect with the mythology, music, and devotion behind each composition
- Progress through a structured graded path toward Arangetram
